I do love a good stout. And this is no exception! The Hook Norton Brewery has been around since the mid 1800s. That’s a pretty long time in anyone’s books. It is a family owned brewery, which I guess makes it quite unique in this era. You can find loads of information about them here. Their website is pretty amazing really, with lots and lots of information. They’re also pretty active on Twitter, with some good customer interaction which is a nice touch. Find them on Twitter.
What they say about the Double Stout:
Smooth and full-bodied with a refreshing hoppy aftertaste. A blend of dark malts give it a character all of its own. Black malt enriches the colour and teases the palate, and brown malt gives it the dryness.
What I thought:
I couldn’t agree more! It’s wonderfully bitter, reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate. Some might say a bit of burnt toast, but not overpoweringly so, just enough. Smooth? Oh yes, very smooth. Hoppy? Surprisingly hoppy for a stout. Recently I’ve been finding IPAs hoppy and stouts very malty, with the bitterness coming mainly from the roasted grains, but Hook Norton Double Stout is perfectly balanced and well proportioned.
If you’re after a stout, this is a good place to start.
